I remember back then when barcode scanners didn’t exist. The large supermarkets here would have their cashiers looking at their price lists which were typed on bond papers and compiled in fastened folders. Lines were normal since it can take a while tallying the orders. Now lots of stores have POS but most still have long lines. Lol. At least some things never change.
