Mom has eye problems.

I went out earlier with my mom to visit one of the eye wear and glasses shop in Lipa. Lately she has been experiencing difficulties in seeing and she has also been experiencing uncomfortable situations whenever her eyes get cross-eyed.

She has been suffering blurry vision and dizziness for the past few days so we thought maybe she needs to get her eyes checked again since the last time she had her glasses made, her left eye had astigmatism. After having her eye checked, the doctor said both her eyes now have astigmatism that is why she needs to get her eye glasses replaced. Since it will take a few weeks for the glasses to be made she won’t be wearing any glasses for a week or two.

While searching for astigmatism in the internet I found out that in the United States people who have nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism have laser eye surgery as one of their options instead of using contact lenses or eyeglasses. It is said that it is a treatment which reshapes the cornea in order to produce clear vision. After a successful operation, the patient may experience improved vision immediately but it can also take around six months before their vision stabilizes. After that they can enjoy freedom from corrective eye wear such as eyeglasses and contact lens enabling them to do more things than when they had to wear glasses and contact lenses.

One of the good resources I found for it aside from the FDA site was DocShop.com. While reading about it on their site I found that the treatment is fairly painless since only a small amount of tissue is actually affected during the surgery. If its becomes uncomfortable for the patient medications can be applied to help them ease their discomfort. I was particularly interested on how much these treatments usually cost since I’m thinking of suggesting that to Dad so he can read up on it and think it over for Mom.

I saw that on average the prices for the surgery cost around $499 up to $2500 per eye. It is quite expensive for us but I figured we can get it with some help from our relatives there in the U.S. especially since I found out from the site that they had eye care specialists located both in Juneau and Anchorage. :) My aunt who visited last month lives in Juneau so in case Mom decides to try getting a laser treatment for her eye, it would be easier because we have relatives nearby.
