Kingston DT Mini Fun 2gb - Write Protect error?

Ugh.

It was working properly last night. Everything that is important to me is in there. All my files, all my important files! Ugh. This morning when I opened my pc and tried to open my flash drive to check my mail since I use Mozilla Thunderbird portable, it said it wasn’t formatted. I was surprised and annoyed. That was working last night and now everything I worked on it gone. Some of the files I don’t even have a back-up saved in my pc. Damn it. The survey data I worked on was there! F***. I’m just so pissed off at the moment. All I can do is curse myself for not having them backed-up.

The weird thing is that it kept telling me that it was write protected… Sheesh, it doesn’t have a write-protect lock for Pete’s sake! I looked and looked and its not there at all. ****

I searched the internet and I found some sites that had people complaining of it as well. One person even took apart his disk but still it didn’t work. Sheesh. I tried all the suggestions in all the forums and threads I found but nothing worked at all.

This sucks big time.

Put the drive in your usb port and reinstall windows while it is loaded, but instead of completing the installation when it comes up asking which partition you want to install it on it will show your USB drive also, slect that partition and format.

    Hi Sergio,

Unfortunately I still haven’t found a solution to it. :( So its still useless to me right now. (I think I even lost it already. LOL.)

the same problem by me. it seems there is a problem in compatibility between DTMF USB 2.0 construction and USB 1.1 port of the pc/laptop. when i connect it to the pc/laptop with USB20, everything is OK, writing, reading - no problem.

I found this on another site and it realy worked. It erases everything from it but make it work after that But pay big attention DO NOT have any other device conected to USB port as it is going to erase all from it:
My kingston flash drive had the following symptoms:
    - Could read data
    - Couldn’t write/format (”write-protection error”)
    - Every file had the “archive” flag set. (attrib command in dos prompt)
It was fixed running the low-level formatting utility from Apacer website.
    http://www.apacer.com/en/support/downloads/Repair_v2.9.1.1.zip
(named “HT203 Handy Steno 2.0 Repair Tool” - or XXXX Repair Tool, for the software is model/manufacturer independent.)
Be careful to have only the flash drive you need to repair connected to your computer, as the software is quite ‘interfaceless’, and doesn’t even allow you to choose which drive you want to format - seems to me it assumes the first removable drive available.
Wish you guys the best of luck.

This solution worked perfectly, thank you.

I got the “write protection” error intermittently, whenever I copied many files, after a bunch of files my Kingston 8gb data traveller became write protected. Unplugging and plugging back would solve the problem for a while.

The site seems trustworthy, so I suppose the download was no trojan.

    Hi!
I had “write protected” error on Kingston Dataraveler 4GB. Was searching for solutions quite a while until i came here :) Wasn`t able to format it using Windows. Luckily that software from Apacer`s site worked. Tough when it was formatting the drive in the end it gave error message “format failed”. Then i replugged the stick, Windows didn`t managed to install driver for it and i thought it`s dead. But then i replugged it again and Windows recognized it. When i tried to browse the drive i got message that it wasn`t formatted, i formatted it with Windows and it`s done! Works! :)

BUENISIMO!!!!

    -
Gracias al foro este!!!! GROSO EL QUE PUSO EL LINK!! PARA TODOS LOS ARGENTINOS… NO ES CHAMUYO!! FUNCA DE NUEVO!!! (hasta había mandado mail a kingston)

  23. Daniel on September 26th, 2008 2:04 am

    Instrucciones en castellano:
    - bajar el .zip
    - descomprimir
    - conectar solo el pendrive a formatear
(se va a borrar todo el contenido del disco extraible, detecta automáticamente, no da a elegir unidad.)
    - ejecutar el .exe
    - el soft va a detectar y formatear automaticamente

GRACIAS!!!!! AHORA ME ANDA EL PENDRIVE!!!
    :D
