When too much gets bad…

October 18th, 2007

I posted the yesterday about vanity and cosmetic surgery. Thinking back on what bingskee said on her comment, I started to wonder why some people are obsessed with vanity and being beautiful to the point that they undergo every possible surgery to enhance their appearance. I’ve seen in the news some celebrities mentioning that getting fixed can be quite addicting.

I searched in Google for some of the available cosmetic surgeries and I’ve seen that some of the popular ones are rhinoplasty (nose jobs), otoplasty (ear jobs), face lift, forehead lift, eyelid lift, and facial implants. I’m not quite sure how many more facial surgeries people will discover in the future. In the US, much like Michigan, North Carolina plastic surgery clinics seem to be gaining ground as well. I was looking at the offered services especially for the face and they seem to have most the popular services available in their list.

I remember the story of Narcissus. Maybe it really is true that we can be so obsessed about how we look that we end up falling in love with ourselves. I’m not against the idea of loving ourselves first, since I do understand that its one of the best ways we can learn to love others because if we don’t care for ourselves how can we really know how to care for others. But loving yourself too much can be quite disastrous as well since sometimes it leads to becoming self-absorbed and selfish.

Also this made me remember a commercial that was once popular in our local channels. It was that of Biolink, where the baby was really dark skinned, and both parents were fair skinned. No matter how much we change ourselves our genes get passed on. Wouldn’t it feel weird for your children if they looked so different from their parents?
