Living the flash disk life
September 21st, 2007
Back when I was younger, the usual storage for files is the floppy diskette. I used to hoard them since I usually need larger storage for the documents, presentations and pictures I need. These days, a flash disk is a must for students and other people who have tons of files that they use at home and at work. I am still studying, and I have no means to buy a laptop even if I want one badly. Thus, I’m quite dependent on my flash disk. Here’s a shot of my baby:

Aside from school documents, art files and photos, I use my flash disk for my wordpress files. My flash disk acts as my desktop away from home, so I need an application that would help me utilize my flash disk as such. That is why I’m quite grateful that I found PortableApps before. With the suite installed on my flash disk, I can:
check my schedule (Mozilla Sunbird PE)
access my email (Mozilla Thunderbird PE)
access my favorite sites I bookmarked (Mozilla Firefox PE)
upload and transfer files through ftp (FireFTP or FileZilla)
create documents, spreadsheets and presentations (OpenOffice.org Portable)
edit and create art files (GIMP Portable)
view PDF’s (Sumatra PDF Portable)
chat with friends (Miranda IM Portable)
and a whole lot more.
Others will say they can easily get that on internet cafe computers, but there are some internet cafe’s which doesn’t have the applications I need and at times they do not allow people to install programs. Also when I use the school’s computers, there are a lot of applications usually not available and not accessible such as chat and art/design programs.
Since I have my own email with my domain, I enjoy Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client because its easy to set-up for all my email accounts, it loads quite fast and it works the way I want it. Even better, there was an announcement a few days ago about a new thrust on improving Mozilla Thunderbird.
And having my ftp handy, means I can easily add themes and plug-ins to improve my blog even when I’m not at home. I have weird and sometimes unintelligible passwords, so I need the user names and passwords auto-saved on my programs.
It works even for smaller memory ones, such as the 128mb and 256mb flash disks.
Plus its open source.

ah, i found those portable apps especially useful in the office, because of the limitations set by the IT department.
hehe. when there’s a will, there’s a way.
