DLSU Green Archers wins against Ateneo Blue Eagles! 65 - 60

September 30, 2007 · Filed Under College Life and DLSU · 6 Comments

Hahaha, finally we won’t hear another sermon from one of our early professors tomorrow regarding losing another game to Ateneo. DLSU Green Archers win with 65 points against Ateneo Blue Eagles’ 60 points.

DLSU 65 vs. ATENEO 60

My sister being able to get some tickets from her friends, went to Cubao earlier to join them, while our whole family stayed at home and watched the game in my parents bedroom. We were all cheering and screaming for La Salle, but it was mom who was cheering the most. Hahaha.

Oh well, I guess everything will be going back to normal in school now since the tension caused by the uncertainty of the men’s basketball team making it into the finals has now dissipated. So the scalpers still have a business for the next few games since students from the campus would still be interested. Heh.

P.S. When Ateneo was able to shoot another 3 points a few seconds before the clock, I seriously felt scared that it would be a repeat of the last game’s ending. Fortunately the team was able to shoot some more to compensate for it. :D

PayPal Philippines can now receive funds!!!

September 29, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology · 7 Comments

I was busy browsing the internet when I saw in someone’s twitter a note about PayPal and being able to receive funds in the Philippines so I did a search on Google and guess what?

Its true!!!

OMG. I hurriedly checked my PayPal account and I did see that the request money option is working now. :) I’m seriously excited and laughing and smiling like a moron right now. A few hours ago I was just thinking how I can fully utilize the internet to earn and was so discouraged by not having a PayPal receive account in our country.

Haha, so now I don’t have much to think of. :D

I’ll update this post with new articles I find but for now here are a few articles related to the story:

Finally we can receive paypal funds in the Philippines

Paypal is now in the Philippines

Paypal sends money to the Philippines

Paypal Philippines can now receive payments

Paypal Philippines now fully active

Paypal receive functionality now available in the Philippines

Paypal is now available in the Philippines with full send and receive feature

P.S.

So now is the good chance to grab the opportunity to earn through the paid survey site I just posted earlier here. And as I’ve said if you wanted to join you have the option below to join as my referral and help me with a few cents, or you can just join the site without saying I’m the one who referred you.

Nika’s referral link to paid survey site

Non-referral link to paid survey site

You can start earning and saving those payments until you are able to get your own debit card or bank account to attach to a PayPal account. The available debit cards in the Philippines that I know so far is Unionbank’s Visa Electron. I’ll try to find other good money making opportunities that other bloggers can utilize and use so you can watch out for that on my next posts. :) This would be a great Christmas for me. I can feel it. :P Hahaha.

If anyone wants to try it, you can send me a $1 donation at mtcatbagan[at]gmail[dot]com which is my paypal email. :) Hahahaha.

Updated: DLSU gets wi-fi and a random paid survey website

September 28, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology, College Life and DLSU · 5 Comments

So that’s why there was a sudden rush of students who have their laptops around in the campus. I was wondering a few days back and was talking with my sister about the new students and their laptops. We were thinking that maybe its the new thing for freshmen. Then while activating my My.Lasalle account earlier, I saw the announcement about the wi-fi implementation in the campus. Before it was only in the library and you had to have the card from the library and stick it in your notebook for the wi-fi to work. Now there are lots of hot spots in the campus making it easier for the students to access the university’s network.

I’ll update this entry later, i have to leave the library now and meet my sister. :)

Update: Sorry I just got back online got home really late yesterday. :)

I haven’t fully read as to which places don’t have the hots pots available but from what I remember most of the places in the campus have it. Now I want my own laptop even more. :( Well, I guess I’d just have to get used to drooling and ogling on all those *HOT* laptops I see all over the campus until I get enough to get myself one.

By the way, Jean told me about a paid survey site she was a member of and I decided to try it. I don’t earn huge sums from it, but the small amounts help when they pile up. Please be reminded that it is not a get rich quick scheme because it will really take you some time to earn decent money from it, but its not that hard if you have the time to answer some of the available surveys on a daily basis. Also a few spare bucks can help to buy you coffee and a donut or maybe even some hosting and domains, or even just add to your grocery budget. Its quite easy to finish, since each survey is only made up of a few questions. The hitch on the program is that you have to post it in your blog.

You don’t necessarily have to make a new single post for every survey you answer. You can just include it in your posts, maybe at the end part of it just for it not to take so much space on your entries. To be able to earn as well, you have to post in in a blog that is at least 90 days old. But I think it depends too since some surveys had no blog age requirement when I read around the site. Also you need a PayPal account to be able to get paid since they send it to your account after your account reaches at least $5. You don’t have to do it everyday and it really just depends on you if you want to do the surveys or not.

So there, part of the reason why I posted this is because some of my entries might have the surveys attached to it in the end part, so I hope you guys aren’t bothered by it. In case you are interested to join please click the link below. It is a referral link, and its up to you if you want to help me with a few cents by joining under my referral or not.

Note: Free wordpress users might not be able to use their blogs for this. I don’t know about wordpress.com’s ads or income generation policies using their free blog services so please check with them first if you are unsure as well. I think most of the other free blog sites work like: Blogger, LiveJournal, Friendster, MySpace, Yahoo 360and others. You can learn more by checking their site out on the link above.

Wordpress 2.3

September 25, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology · 6 Comments

I’ve just finished my wordpress 2.3 upgrade. :) Yipeeee!

I was nervous to try it at first since I was really worried that I might break something and lose all my blog entries. I read the upgrade instructions first, around 3-5 times to make sure I would do it right. Hahaha.

So what I did was back-up my tables like stated in the directions by accessing my PhpMyAdmin and got both the zip and non-zip file of my backup. I then activated the maintenance mode, so people who accidentaly stumble into my blog won’t find it weird why database errors were showing up, and then I deactivated all my plugins.

-_- Yeah stupid me, I forgot not to deactivate the maintenance mode plugin, so anyone who might have passed by did see the database errors that were showing up while the transfer of the new wordpress files were being done. :D

After pounding my head on that minor stupidity, I tried not to panic by making myself some iced tea and find anything I can eat on the fridge. There was nothing interesting on the fridge though, so I just consoled myself with the iced tea and fed “MingMing” our male cat since he was whining.

mingming

After 10 minutes or so I went back to my computer to check on the transfer. I am on dial-up so it is quite slow. Seeing that the transfer was finished, I headed to the upgrade page and then I was done. I crossed my fingers when I checked my blog on the browser for the first time after the upgrade and I’m quite happy that I didn’t break anything. :D So now I have the 2.3 version installed, and the tags running. Its actually one of the reasons why I wanted to upgrade. At least now my related posts plugin works. :P I might even try the configurable tag cloud later and see if its good to add on my blog or not. I also found out while reactivating my plugins that the version checker works. I have two installed plugins that notified me of its new version availability so I upgraded them immediately.

While writing this post, I am poking around the visual editor and I’m quite ecstatic because the “justified” paragraph format is there. :D I’m obsessed with the justified format in my papers and other documents so I’m very happy. (Note: I’m quite easy to please. Haha.)

My desktop got tagged.(updated)

September 22, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology · 47 Comments

freeview

Hahaha, alright, Ate Beng tagged me yesterday and since it was an easy one I decided to do it for today. Mine is just normal I guess. :D I usually just use pictures I take as my wallpaper.

Desktop

(Click the thumbnail for the full size)

I chose this one because it helps me relax. I took it last May and I just love looking at it. :)

Uhm, I think the 5 friends I’ll tag are:

kath
ann
ate kengks
jovi
chuva

My Desktop Free View Instruction:

A. Upon receiving this tag, immediately perform a screen capture of your desktop. It is best that no icons be deleted before the screen capture so as to add to the element of fun.

You can do a screen capture by: [1] Going to your desktop and pressing the Print Scrn key (located on the right side of the F12 key). [2] Open a graphics program (like Picture Manager, Paint, or Photoshop) and do a Paste (CTRL + V). [3] If you wish, you can “edit” the image, before saving it.

B. Post the picture in your blog. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop just below it if you want. You can explain why you preferred such look or why is it full of icons. Things like that.

C. Tag five of your friends and ask them to give you a Free View of their desktop as well.

D. Add your name to this list of Free Viewers with a link pointing directly to your Desktop Free View post to promote it to succeeding participants.

According to Ate Beng:

Living the flash disk life

September 21, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology, College Life and DLSU · 3 Comments

Back when I was younger, the usual storage for files is the floppy diskette. I used to hoard them since I usually need larger storage for the documents, presentations and pictures I need. These days, a flash disk is a must for students and other people who have tons of files that they use at home and at work. I am still studying, and I have no means to buy a laptop even if I want one badly. Thus, I’m quite dependent on my flash disk. Here’s a shot of my baby:

flashkoo

:D Aside from school documents, art files and photos, I use my flash disk for my wordpress files. My flash disk acts as my desktop away from home, so I need an application that would help me utilize my flash disk as such. That is why I’m quite grateful that I found PortableApps before. With the suite installed on my flash disk, I can:

check my schedule (Mozilla Sunbird PE)

access my email (Mozilla Thunderbird PE)

access my favorite sites I bookmarked (Mozilla Firefox PE)

upload and transfer files through ftp (FireFTP or FileZilla)

create documents, spreadsheets and presentations (OpenOffice.org Portable)

edit and create art files (GIMP Portable)

view PDF’s (Sumatra PDF Portable)

chat with friends (Miranda IM Portable)

and a whole lot more.

Others will say they can easily get that on internet cafe computers, but there are some internet cafe’s which doesn’t have the applications I need and at times they do not allow people to install programs. Also when I use the school’s computers, there are a lot of applications usually not available and not accessible such as chat and art/design programs.

Since I have my own email with my domain, I enjoy Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client because its easy to set-up for all my email accounts, it loads quite fast and it works the way I want it. Even better, there was an announcement a few days ago about a new thrust on improving Mozilla Thunderbird. ;) And having my ftp handy, means I can easily add themes and plug-ins to improve my blog even when I’m not at home. I have weird and sometimes unintelligible passwords, so I need the user names and passwords auto-saved on my programs.

It works even for smaller memory ones, such as the 128mb and 256mb flash disks.

Plus its open source. ;)

A View from Somewhere (Photoblog)

September 17, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology, Random Ramblings · 6 Comments

A shameless plug for my recently created A View From Somewhere Photo Blog.

I’ve been taking lots of random pictures since I got my camera last year. Its just a simple point and shoot (Canon IXUS 800) one which my mom bought for me for my school needs. I posted some of them before (mostly cloud images) in my deviantart account. Recently, I’ve been interested in taking more pictures of random things I see during my commute from Batangas to Taft. So some of my pictures there were taken while I am inside a bus either on my way to school, or on my way home.

I also have been interested in macro photography. :D Just simple ones that my camera can handle. My favorite subjects would be the sky and nature. I haven’t taken much cloud pictures lately because my camera works best with nearer subjects especially since I only have 6 mega pixels. Most of the macro images in the photoblog were taken in our small garden. I still have a lot of images to upload, but I am trying to choose among them the best ones I took (at least in my opinion, hehe) so I can save some space in my hosting. :)

In case you guys have the time, I’d appreciate it if you dropped by A View from Somewhere and left comments on any images you want to comment on, and maybe even give me advice on how to improve my novice photography skills. :)

Have a great day!

Defend your answer.

September 13, 2007 · Filed Under College Life and DLSU · 5 Comments

There are just some professors you will never forget even after some years have gone. You might have forgotten their names and maybe even their faces, but you don’t really forget the subjects they taught. Not necessarily because you learned anything from it, but because of the moments you and they shared. Precious moments where thoughts of strangulation and asphyxiation played morbidly on your mind, while you give them your close-up winning smile.

Thus, I will never…ever… forget my IntPhil (Introduction to Philosophy) professor. I think he enjoyed me quite well ahem, torturing me. Each time we had our long quizzes returned, I had a failing mark. Always 1 or 2 points away from passing. I don’t know why but he had this smirk on his face when he calls my name and hands me my paper. I believe my answers are just as good as my friends’, but he prefers the long and elaborate essays compared to my brief and concise answers. One time I tried doing it elaborately, still I failed.

I was seriously annoyed and worried that none of my efforts were meeting his requirements. For the finals, I reviewed all my notes all week, even to the point of memorizing each word. A week after the finals, came the dreaded CCD (Course Card Distribution Day). I was actually nervous, and it was quite obvious as I walked around in circles, anxious to know whether I made the cut or if I got cut.

When my turn came to enter the room, my very good friend Vicky, accompanied me because I was really nearing my very first nervous breakdown (and I was just 17 then…). So we enter, and lo! The smirk appears. I try my best to be calm, and utter, “Sir, did I pass?” for my distress was quite apparent. My tormentor smiles sardonically and says,

What do you think? Defend your answer.

I seriously wanted to twist his neck and forget about everything life has to offer. Then Vicky nudged me, distracting me from my enticingly morbid thoughts. I coughed and stared at the ebil professor for a few seconds before I graced him with the sweetest smile I can muster. Yes, even better than the sweet smiles one gives to the object of their affection and desires. Then I took the card and Vicky outside.

Did I pass? Lets just say, the students at Miguel Building at that time wondered if someone just won in the lottery.

Documentaries I grew up with…

September 7, 2007 · Filed Under Random Ramblings · 8 Comments

I was blog hopping and I went over to Sidetrip as part of my daily reading when I remembered how I got interested in watching documentaries.

Back when I was younger and cable television wasn’t available, my love for documentaries started. I grew up watching Cheche Lazaro and the Probe Team. I followed the show from ABS-CBN to GMA7 to ABC5 and back to ABS-CBN. I loved watching The Probe Team because it questioned issues and other events the public don’t normally question. These were the issues the public rarely aired their sentiments for fear of retaliation from the people involved. I remember one of the highly questioned issue before regarding the lifestyle checks and it was supposed to be aired but then an older episode was aired in lieu of the original one that was shown in the earlier commercials.

The Probe Team stopped airing then and I was quite disappointed, but I was ecstatic when they started airing again on ABC5. It was one of the shows I really try to watch on television, since there are a few ones left in our local channels thats actually worth watching with it being filled with endless soap operas and game shows. I was an avid fan of the Cheche Lazaro Presents as well. I really enjoyed the show’s presentation and narratives. It wasn’t boring and it definitely showed you the usual and not so usual spots to visit in case you visit those countries.

I also watched 5 and Up on its first few years because it was quite unique and interesting. Although children were presenting it, the show had a serious but fun atmosphere that was very engaging for young viewers like me at that time. I graduated from my 5 and Up interest as I grew older, and my attention focused into more serious and mature documentaries.

Other documentaries I enjoyed watching were:

The Correspondents

I-Witness

Jessica Soho Reports

Travel Time

I miss seeing these shows. If there was a channel dedicated to documentaries and other programs as good as them, I’d be the first to sign-up for it. I’m so tired of watching television and just seeing and hearing the same celebrities each time I open it.

P.S. I find it interesting that the reporters I enjoy watching normally have the same kind of voice or way of speaking. Like Howie Severino and Abner Mercado, or Cheche Lazaro and Julie Yap-Daza.

What I also enjoy about them is that they narrate their documentaries either in fluent English, or in fluent Filipino. Its like music to the ears.

New layout and Wordpress Themes I like.

September 6, 2007 · Filed Under Blogging and Technology · 8 Comments

To those who have visited the site before yesterday, you might have noticed that I changed the layout. I found this one on the recent entry in the Weblog Tools Collection and I decided to try it. I’ve been tweaking the needed details since I installed it. So far I like the layout, I’m just not to happy that the background for the single post is black. I would have wanted it to be the same way as the home page. It seems I broke the theme when I edited some parts. :D I’ll try and see how to fix it. :) Yay its fixed now. :P

Previously, I used The Bus Full of Hippies theme. I love it but since the flower file is quite a large file, my dial-up dies and I don’t want other dial-up users experiencing it. :) I then chose a very minimalist design after that which is the Blog.txt theme which I loved too. It loads very fast and its easy to use. I might go back to it if I get bored of this one, unless of course I find another theme to use. :)

Ate Beng, a fellow Wordpress Pinoys member, makes wordpress themes and I’ve seen some that I would like to try such as the Papilion, Refresh! and Nostalgie themes. :D

So, what do you think of the current theme and layout? :P
